New MacBooks are out!

And I want one! Black! :)

This time Apple really redesigned the whole computer. The keyboard is different, the screen is widescreen, harddrive and RAM are easier to get to (remember this), the latch for the screen is not mechanical any more, etc.

Again, some people think that price is too high but hey, it’s Apple! You don’t get this degree of details anywhere else! Sure, it may not be the fastest computer for the price, but who wants that!? :)

As I’ve seen the specs I can say that there are just a few things that I don’t know if I like:

  1. Glossy screen - it supposed to have more contrast and vivid colors but I don’t know if that is worth having a mirror on your laptop.
  2. Intel-integrated graphics card with shared memory :( - which probably sucks even compared to Radeon 9200 in my iBook G4.
  3. The new keyboard - I’m not sure if flat keys are the way to go, maybe I’ll be surprised.

There may be somo other details but I’ll have to see it in person. The one think I am happy about is that the black version has “matte” case finish and not the “glossy” one! :) Which makes me want it even more! But sadly, I have some other debts to pay before I can get another loan for a MacBook.

Here you can find some real-life pics of the new thingie: the white and the black.

Cyberpunk

May 11th, 2006 at 00:00

Cool! I got published today for the first time! :)

I wrote a paper titled Cyberpunk - time of virtual cultures as my final paper for high-school Sociology. It was written as any other high-school paper - in the last moment, in 3 days before deadline and with lots of semantic and sintactic errors.

Bethke - CyberpunkBut, in my humble opinion, it wasn’t all that bad. The subject was interesting and I am a science fiction fan while beeing some kind of techno freak, too. So, with a little research I’ve discovered a few interesting things about Cyberpunk. Sure, the paper is more sociological than technical or literal, but I think anyone can find something interesting in it.

Go check it out at Dag’s site ZnanstvenaFantastika.org - category Teorija. (note: in Slovene!)

You are free to comment here, but please, keep in mind - it’s bad :(

Anybody who doesn’t cut his speed at the sight of a police car is probably parked.

Speed of food?!

May 9th, 2006 at 01:28

Well, why not? We have “speed of light“, “speed of sound” and “godspeed“, why not “speed of food”?

And food has speeds. A few of them, actually. There’s “fast food” and “slow food” and there’s even that “ordinary food speed” that we all enjoy on sunday afternoon with our familly.

But the real question is: “How fast can food be?” and “Is there a food speed limit?”

Can police come to you at the restaurant and go:
“Sir, licence and registration, please.”

As you look puzzled and look around for aliens, he continues:
“Do you know you were speeding?”

You can’t believe your ears so you ask back, even more puzzled: “Speeding?!”
“Food-speed-limit is 2 bites per minute in this place, so keep it down, ok?”

You look at your cheeseburger-greased hands and in a flash-back you remeber taking 3 bites in a row.
“But sir, I haven’t eaten in 2 days. This is my first food after spending 48 hours in a mine shaft.”

“Doesn’t matter, sir. Rules are rules, we all have to eat by them.”
You take a look at that inviting burger and mumble something like: “Umm, ok, I’ll remeber that.”

“Just don’t let it happen again, ok? Have a nice day, sir.”

And then your life is changed forever, because you can never ever again eat a whole cheeseburger under a minute! You’ll always find yourself looking over your shoulder, checking, if there’s a “food police” behind your back.

I don’t know, you tell me!

Most useful

As I’ve rediscovered Digg.com a few days ago this was the first site I found very useful: 100fps.

The whole site (or should I say page) is dedicated to provide human-understandable explanation what is interlacing and how to get rid of it. And because of my father’s latest purchase, Canon MV901, I will probably have to explain that to him, so this is very helpful resource.

Besides that, I’ve rediscovered the show (video podcast) called Diggnation, which is basicaly two guys chatting about most interesting “diggs” of the day. And I was amazed in how many formats you are able to get the show! They have mp3, h264, xvid, theora, wmv and mov, in big and small versions (except mp3)! How great is that!
The show is interesting and funny too, so you should check it out.

I think Theora has some big issues. It creates twice the file size for same resolution and poorer quality when compared to h264. There must be something wrong…

Strace?

May 7th, 2006 at 00:25

I’ve heard about this tool before but never got to really try it.

But today, thanks to this blog post by Ravi at All About Linux blog and a little wierd programming languages experimenting I’ve been doing past few days, I finally got to try it and get some useful results. I’ve actually managed to get the bug fixed! :)

Does anyone know how to use strace-graph?
