I've come to like "tree-based" and "column-based" (multiple columns, Apple Finder style) file managers too much. Some people claim it the best file-manager. I just use Konqueror in KDE, and I'm more then content with it. But I guess if you use Gnome, it's a bit awkward having to run a QT/KDE app. Did you try gentoo (file-manager, not distribution)?
