It’s all clear now…

I just had an revelation! I know why people say that linux sucks. It’s because there is NO DECENT FILE (F****G) MANAGER! :(

If you’re not using KDE you are fucked! If you try to use Konqueror as file manager in GNOME you lose all the integration, which isn’t so imporant as the fact that you lose 50MB of RAM! Come on!

In last 3 years I’ve tried A LOT of file managers and I have yet to find one that suits me. This is my view:

  • Konqueror - a great file manager, but too much other features, too big memory footprint
  • Nautilus - slow, slow, slow, usable in Browser mode but nothing like Konqueror. (Did I’ve mentioned it’s slow?)
  • Tux Commander - nice, two-pane, GTK look, fast, but not not so intuitive to use. Slow development due to Kylix base (pascal).
  • ROX Filer - nice, fast, lacks tree mode, constant resizing of the window is confusing, hard to do any drag & drop without more windows.

These are just the best ones. I’ll not even mention the others that are plane useless or try to simplify the most simple things.

So, I’ll not be using Konqueror in Gnome, Nautilus is too slow for me, Tux Commander needs some more work and it seams that ROX has the most potential of them all. I’ll have to play with it some more.

This is a call for help! If anyone knows a DamnGoodFileManager for linux I would be very happy to try it out.

Why isn’t there anything like PathFinder for Linux? I guess I’ll use Emacs in Dired-Mode for now and write a file manager later.

Did you try gentoo (file-manager, not distribution)?

Some people claim it the best file-manager. I just use Konqueror in KDE, and I’m more then content with it. But I guess if you use Gnome, it’s a bit awkward having to run a QT/KDE app.

Yes, I’ve tried gentoo (the file manager :) and I must say that it just doesn’t feel right. I’ve come to like “tree-based” and “column-based” (multiple columns, Apple Finder style) file managers too much.

I guess Emacs has an answer :)

Well. whatever rocks your boat :]

Emacs …lol, all it lacks is to do coffee …it already has a built in chessboard and a shriek

There is another one, that i’m using: krusader. It’s a kind of midnight commander/windows commander/norton commander/total commander (choose the most suitable:) for KDE.
I like it very much and that’s all about it. Krusader.
