Bookmarks?!

Today, as I was trotting up and down the google, searching for “AJAX”:http://www.fiftyfoureleven.com/resources/programming/xmlhttprequest/examples implementations, I stumbbled upon an interesting “service” - “Spurl!”:http://www.spurl.net/

The basic idea is to have your bookmarks accessible everywhere and use them like they were on your local maschine. So, what this “service” does, it enables you to have a “sidebar” (in IE and Gecko-based browsers anyway), which works virtualy the same as your normal bookmarks sidebar. You can add bookmarks, remove them, move them to another “category” (or folder), write descriptions , add tags (for easier searching) and much more. It’s realy simple. On top of that you can access your bookmarks directly on the web, without the use of the sidebar. This turns out to be very, very useful as Safari doesn’s support sidebars, wich renders Sprul! virtualy useless (because I use Safari for 90% of my surfing). But I think I can make Spurl! into a useful tool anyway. I will just use it for storing my bookmarks on other computers and still have them accessable on every other computer I use. Another thing Spurl! enables you to do is to import your existing bookmarks and export your whole Sprul! collection in an bookmarks.html file, which has a Mozilla-bookmarks-format, so you can import them back into your browser. Nice :)

But wait there’s more! :) Spurl! is very useful as it stands right now, but there is some other features worth mentioning. First is “bookmarks sharing” or better “bookmarks auto referencing”. When you add or even browse your bookmarks the system provides you with similar bookmarks made by other people using Sprul!. So, you can think of it like “google for bookmarks”. And it realy works! When I bookmarked a site about MacOS X, Spurl! showed me another users bookmark to a realy good Mac-oriented blog (”The Tao Of Mac”:http://the.taoofmac.com.nyud.net:8090/space). I was stuned how well it works! Of course, if you don’t fell confortable sharing your bookmarks you can disable sharing at any time, and still benifit from other users bookmarks.
There are few other thing about Sprul! but let me just say you have to see it and use it to apreciate them. So, go on, “Spurl!”:http://www.spurl.net/
